Mokorotlo Traditional Basotho Hat for Men

The Mokorotlo is a traditional Basotho hat, deeply rooted in the cultural heritage of Lesotho.

This iconic conical straw hat is crafted from indigenous grasses such as mosea or leholi, woven by skilled artisans to create its distinctive shape, which is believed to be inspired by Mount Qiloane—a mountain of great significance in Basotho history.

Historically, the Mokorotlo was worn by tribal chiefs during gatherings known as “Pitso”, where they chanted songs to rally support. Over time, its use expanded, and today, both men and women wear the hat during cultural ceremonies, festivals, and as a symbol of national pride.

The Mokorotlo is so integral to Basotho identity that it appears on Lesotho’s national flag and vehicle license plates.
