Description
The Umbhalo blanket, with its vibrant stripes, is used by the Ndebele tribe. It is usually worn by married women but not restricted to. Beadwork is often added to these blankets and they are worn during traditional ceremonies. Once the full beadwork has been applied the blanket can weigh as much as 25 kilograms. The wearer sometimes dances for up to 10 hours during these ceremonies.
The Umbhalo can also be used in the home as a colourful throw.
