Xibelani – Tsonga Skirt

Xibelani is a Xitsonga word meaning “Knee length” traditional attire worn by women.  It is made by a bolt of cloth about 18 meters from a fabric called salempur. This skirt is pleated carefully to enhance the motion of the hip movement. It is traditional piece of clothing accompanied with a traditional dance.

Description

The history of the xibelani dance goes way back into the early coastal times of southern Mozambique from the 1400s or earlier when Mozambican tribes were experimenting with musical instruments and particularly wooden instruments and percussion sounds from traditional drums, xylophones, and marimbas.
